MOBO Nominations 2009

Jeez what a night! I was at no point drunk but nonetheless my body seems insistent on punishing me for the copious amounts of Patron I got through at the Mayfair Hotel in London last night.

It was a who's who of the British "urban" music scene - pretty much EVERYONE was in attendance (apart from Westwood). I didn't spot Kano or Lemar but apparently they were about, alongside the likes of Mz Bratt, Young Nate, Reggie Yates, Master Shortie, Bluey Robinson, JLS, Wiley, Semtex, Bashy, Chipmunk... and many more. I'm not gonna lie, when I saw Wiley I was geeked. Like I'm a professional and shit, and I don't really get starstruck, but it took every bit of willpower to not go upto Wiley on one of the many occasions he was standing around near us and ask to take a photo with him. Pause. Oh and Semtex. I don't get starstruck but I was pretty much in awe of both Wiley and Semtex. Pause twice.

The catering was a madness - shout out to Ian and Samantha at Cottons who I'm reliably informed were responsible for the downright spectacular food. Rhian from MOBO just made my day by telling me that they've got a restaurant in Chalk Farm (not far from the Roundhouse) which I will most definitely be visiting very soon.

Moving on... JLS and Chipmunk touched the stage alongside the host Reggie Yates to do some of the announcing.

Big up Oritse, he clearly does not give a fuck. The Lovely Jade Ewen performed as did Bashy and H-Boogie.

And finally, the actual reason for the party - here's the nominations. In bold my tips to win and in italics who I'll actually be voting for! Best African and Best Gospel I've got no idea about! Shouts to Chip Diddy.

"You've seen me grow from a Boy to a Man, so this must be the end of the road..." ( c ) Chipmunk

Chipmunk - Oopsy Daisy

I have to big this man up, I interviewed him earlier today and he made a good impression despite being at the end of a long day of press. Congratulations on the MOBO Nominations fam, they're very much deserved. This is a big video for the mainstream. I love Red btw, even though I heard a couple things about the shoot (not from Chip though, best clarify that because I don't wanna be responsible for spreading any foolishness!).

Oh I went to the MOBO Nominations Party tonight and it was a madness. I shall post about it along with some photos tomorrow! I really need to go to bed now.

"Say you wanna walk away, you ain't got nothing to say // well I salute you, go on out the door now, you take care..."

Whitney Houston - Salute

Ah Whitney, how I've missed your dulcet tones. Produced by Tricky Stewart, but it's written by the OG and not, as you might assume, his derivative but arguably superior (at least of late) imitator. It becomes twice as confusing because this sounds kinda like Usher's "Moving Mountains" which was written by... I'll let you figure it out for yourselves. Or just type the right words into Google.

Whitney's swagger when she sings "don't call this a comeback" is immense.

Jay-Z - Blueprint 3 Tracklist

Looks immense. Drake, J Cole, Kid Cudi and Mr Hudson. It's like a who's who of the up-and-comers.

R Kelly featuring Keri Hilson - Number One (Video)

I haven't been the world's biggest Kellz fan in the last few years but this is big.

UK Cypher

Certain UK Hip-Hop and UK Hip-Hop MCs piss me off. However I think Tinie Tempah is vastly underrated as a lyricist and I've got time for G FrSH and Bigz so this is worth a watch.

Introducing Bluey Robinson

What a voice. Trust me, this guy is gonna be a superstar, if you don't know then get to know. And the confidence it must take to do this! He'll be on Fresh Cuts very soon, I don't really need to say anything else, I think I'll just let his videos do the talking for me. Oh one thing actually, compare the reaction he gets out in the states and in Paris to what he gets in the video on the London Underground.

"Because my style's so original // your A&R should've put me on the original..." ( c ) Chipmunk

Jade Ewen featuring Chipmunk - My Man (remix)

Jeez, Chipmunk's doing bring-ins now? It's been one hell of a year! I did know this was coming but I'm still impressed at the moves Jade's making. They're working this single in pretty much the perfect way (not to jinx it) and I wouldn't be surprised if, in its various guises, it had a lock on radio by the time it's released in September.

I don't think Chip dealt with the tune the way that Bashy does but it's an admirable effort. Dunno why this is being called an unofficial remix to be honest, everything about its conception seems entirely official to me but whatever works for them.

Single is out on September 14th. Support it. Jade will be on Fresh Cuts on September 5th. Or the 12th, I'll get back to you guys when I've locked the date.

Wiley, Dappy, T-Pain and Giggs Impersonations

Jason Lewis and Daniel Kaluuya (dun know I can spell that properly without checking, we interviewed him for the Summer issue of Redtop... the amount of times I've had to write out that name!) do pretty accurate impersonations of Wiley, Dappy, Giggs and T-Pain. The Giggs in particular is spot on.

Spotted at London To MK.

"Look, she ain't into grime fam // but I know she knows who I am..." ( c ) Chipmunk

The England 10 - She Likes To

For your information, the England 10 consists of Wiley, J2K, Wrigley, Ice Kid, Wretch 32, Ghetts, Bashy, Scorcher, Chipmunk and Griminal. Wrigley is anyone ("I'm fly in the clooob"), Skepta should've taken that spot, whatever you thought of his album. Bit of a par totally ignoring Kano but fine, having heard Rock N Roller, Kano isn't really on spitting anymore. 2005 Kano would've destroyed this.

A lot of people aren't rating this. That's air to me, this is heavy. Okay, not every member of this All-Star team holds it down but Chipmunk and Grim murdered it, Wretch and Ghetts did alot, so did Bashy and Wiley. Bash back on that Link Up ("I'm a baller star, I got baller cash...") type swag. In fact that's what this tune reminds me of, a 2009 Link Up with an bigger lineup.

Oh and don't get it twisted, Griminal was serious but Chipmunk was the best on this track. They did save the best two verses for last.

"Is it the champagne dance? no, this is the champagne tour // pop goes the cork, the champagne pours..." ( c ) Skepta

Skepta featuring Jay Sean - Lush

It's not the video I would've shot for this track. At all. Did they shoot this in the same studio as Tinie Tempah's "Tears"? Anyway, it's a big tune and given Jay's reaching international superstar status, Skeppy's picked a good time to drop this collaboration. Let's hope it gets the support it deserves, we've been spinning it.

Charlie Brown - O.M.S. The Mixtape

New Mixtape/FreEP from massive homegrown talent, Charlie Brown, featuring collaborations with Wiley and Tinchy Stryder. "Thanks A Milli" featuring the never-present Eskiboy is my favourite track but it's all pretty good. My personal favourite Charlie Brown track ("Dependancy") isn't on there but that's probably because it's a future smash-hit single they don't wanna give away for free. Look out for that because if it ever gets released it's gonna takeover the A-List.

Download the mixtape here.

"With schoolboy fists we can take this outside // but knowing my luck, that fuck would win..." ( c ) Mr Hudson

Mr Hudson featuring Tinie Tempah - Anyone But Him (Live @ Maida Vale)

I'm a big supporter of Tinie but this verse just isn't cutting it. Sorry Tinie.

Jade Ewen - My Man (Video)

Not sure how long this is gonna stay up for given it's supposed to be a Sun exclusive but I feel a lot more comfortable embedding a YouTube video than I do linking to The Sun's website so I'm not complaining. I fully recommend watching it in fullscreen.

Definite future #1 single. And now I've seen this video I'm even more grateful Chinners is joining me for the the Fresh Cuts interview with Jade next week. Chinners, you're doing the intro and feel free to slyly kick me if I become a blubbering mess, it's a certainty I WILL fluff my lines if you leave me alone!

DJ DeeKay Presents "The Summer Sound" Mixtape

So it was less of a wait that you might've expected. Brand new mix by yours truly for the Summer, featuring the best in Funky House, R&B and UKG. And a couple of other bits and pieces. I came up with this idea when the sun was out and unfortunately it's now gone into hiding but skank along in the rain anyway!

Download the mix here. Check out the tracklisting by clicking on the awesome full artwork below or here. Figured I'd give you guys a sneak peak before it gets printed/pressed and all that good stuff. There'll be some physical CDs around at some point soon, but you might only get one of those if you're really special, or you see me and ask REALLY nicely.

Download Link

Enjoy. Play it really loud and hopefully you can coax the sun out.

DJ DeeKay - The Summer Sound

DJ DeeKay Presents "The Summer Sound" - coming soon...

The visuals are crazy. I mean obviously the mixtape is fire, but at this point I'm really just showing off with the front cover right now.

Big up Anish Jogia on the artwork. For the right price he can make your shit tighter. Mixtape will drop this week.

"In the morning, when I wanna be with you // in the morning, I let your love come in..."

Egypt - In The Morning

I love this tune. Nice looking video, if a big short. Wonder if this tune's gonna blow. Egypt's got a good voice still. Everyone's already made the obvious joke/observation so I'll allow it.

Davinche and Clea - Riding For Love (Fresh Cuts Acoustic) (Video)

Better late than never? Should've uploaded this months ago when the single was out, instead I uploaded the trailer and never got around to putting up the full version, so here it is as a special, slightly belated treat. Davinche and Clea's incredible performance for Fresh Cuts, exclusively from the Roundhouse Radio studios.

Check the levels of talent. I may one day release the fully mixed and mastered 320kbps MP3 of this acoustic performance that's sitting on my hard drive. Until then, let this video be a reminder of what a banger "Riding For Love" is.

"Don't think we're gonna survive, feels like I'm against the tide // it's like our relationship, has got me feeling sea sick..." (c) Ny

Ny - Sea Sick (Snippet)

Brand new Ny. That's enough for y'all to tell this is big. If you wanna hear the whole thing you can lock onto Fresh Cuts where this one will be on heavy rotation. This is good as say Jordin Sparks' Battlefield and other such songs, so lets hope it achieves a similar level of success. Looking forward to the video. Nuff love to Ny, one of my favourite guests we've had on the show.

Produced by Davinche by the way. Who's another favourite Fresh Cuts guest of ours! Britain's got talent.

Jade Ewen - My Man (Live Acoustic)

This song is a guilty pleasure. Possibly because I'm choosing to imagine Jade wrote it about me but probably just because it's quite good. Wish the cameraman behaved himself though, those shots where he's thrusting forward are totally unnecessary. Gave me motion sickness.
