Bluey Robinson Signs Major Label Record Deal

Congratulations to Bluey Robinson who signed to Sony last week. So good to see his hard work rewarded and for an artist we've championed and with so much talent get just a fraction of the recognition he deserves.

To be fair, majors have probably been kicking Bluey's door down for the last 6 months, I've no doubt him and his team have been making them sweat. I just hope Zeus still replies to my emails.

2010 is gonna be such a great year for homegrown soul singers.

Introducing McLean (Digga)

McLean - My Name

We've got a world-exclusive on Fresh Cuts next week: check out McLean performing an amazing acoustic version of his new single My Name for the first time anywhere on radio next Saturday night at 8pm on Roundhouse Radio. He passed through the studios yesterday and blessed us with one hell of a live session which definitely ranks amongst the best we've ever had on the show, performing outstanding acoustic versions of this track and the amazing Broken.

McLean - Broken

This guy's songwriting is phenomenal, but it's not just that - he's a singer with real soul who sings with emotion - something most R&B singers autotune out of their vocals in 2009. Broken and My Name sound particularly good when you hear stripped-down acoustic versions where the vocals and lyrics take centre stage.

Signed to Asylum now and with his debut album due for release next year, expect big things of McLean in 2010.

Toni Braxton at the AMAs

Looking a lot like the woman of my dreams. Rumour has it she's 5'2" so no hype, she's actually pretty much my perfect woman. Fuck a Rihanna, these young R&B bidges ain't got nothing on Ms Braxton.

And as a little bonus (for myself more than anyone else), everyone knows I love Leona.

Craig David - Cool With You

Show him some love. A catalogue like his from any other artist and they'd be revered instead of mocked. Not to mention he's a consumate live performer and an R&B singer that can actually sing (which seems to be a rarity these days). Infinitely weaker vocalists get a lot more praise than Craig David and it's wholly ridiculous.

On a side note, I can't wait for that Jay Sean and Craig David collaboration which will be on the UK version of Jay's album, dropping next week. With that said, in this day and age, seperate UK and US versions = fail. Craig David is a bigger name than Jared Cotter anyway, whichever side of the Atlantic you're on.

Digga (McLean) - Broken (Original Version)

This is the version of Broken I'm talking about when I refer to it as the greatest British R&B song of all time. If you don't feel this I can only assume you're not listening properly or you're one of those people who think Ironik is lyrical. No shots. I'm just saying.

Brandy Singing In Her Bathroom

A few weeks ago I intimated on radio that Brandy wasn't really that great a vocalist any more. Evidently I'm a fucking idiot. I mean the real question is why she doesn't sound like this on her album but putting that to one side, this is great to hear.

"I'm on some Alfie behaviour, I'll call you back later // too many fish in the sea for me..." ( c ) Mr Hudson

N-Dubz featuring Mr Hudson - Playing With Fire

Hudson gives this song some serious weight, I'd love to hear a mix with just him and Tulisa on the vocals. Let's not get it twisted, Mr H is the main attraction here. Well him and Tulisa in another one of her LBDs.

How's T gonna check her man's texts? He's got an iPhone, no unlock code = slipping. I just got a HTC Hero (T-Mobile G2) this weekend, the unlock pattern is a madness. No way anybody's checking my phone unless I want them to.

Jay Sean - Down (Candlelight remix)

Down like it's supposed to be.

"Anybody who thinks I can't do it anymore better step right back and take that..." ( c ) Wiley

Wiley featuring Chew Fu - Take That

Jeeeeeeeeeez this is disgusting. And the video is crazy. He's got the formula.

I'm actually in Birmingham right now with so much shit to do today, and I haven't left the yard yet because this song is on its tenth reload.

Anybody who thinks I'm showing up soon better step right back and take that.

Electric Proms 2009 - 1Xtra After Party

My camera died about halfway through Dizzee so the only footage I've got of the 1Xtra after party is SHITTY video from my waste Blackberry camera. With that in mind, here's the videos of my favourite performances from the Beeb themselves. Bluey shut it down as we expected, Marvell were heavy and the soulful D&B of Blame and Selah sounded phenomenal as played by the live band.

Mr Hudson featuring Ghetts and Tinie Tempah - Anyone But Him (remix)

Where else you heard this?!

"Umm, you win some, you lose some // I ring 'em, I take 'em out for Dim Sum and use 'em..." ( c ) Tinie Tempah

"The industry's the wrong complexion, tryna Sammy Sosa the game..." ( c ) Joe Budden

Joe Budden - Russian Roulette

This is why way back in 2005, Joe Budden was my favourite MC. When he's spitting like this, he's one of the greats.

Griminal - Invincible (Video)

Big. Hold tight the BoxFresh family who've outfitted Grim's entire wardrobe for this video. I like it a lot but I don't know if it's substantial enough to break through. The video is better than an average Channel U/AKA ting, and so's the song but with a hook like that it's not levelling with tracks like Brown Eyes or Something About Your Smile.

Nonetheless, I'm gonna go back on what I said last year about Griminal's style being too raw to go mainstream. He's doing alot, he might just make it.

"Got a couple of fans and now I don't need ya // it's only right I'm wearing my rolex, hello, standard procedure..." ( c ) Wiley

N-Dubz featuring Wiley - Na Na

I expect this YouTube video to get taken down by Universal at some point soon but we'll be playing this, alongside N-Dubz's second single featuring Mr Hudson on Fresh Cuts this week.

"...Mum said stay away from the gold diggers //
But I ain't gonna lie I like sharing, and she likes staring //
And none of us are caring, sex after dinner..." ( c ) Wiley

N-Dubz featuring Chipmunk - Suck Yourself

Chipmunk murks this, and hilariously seems to directly contradict a lot of what Dappy says on his verse (as well as indirecting Dot Rotten). Wonder if he heard the track before he wrote his bars and thought he'd slyly make a point.

No send, you know I've got bare love for N-Dubz. Duku yourself. Nai.

Princess Nyah - Frontline (Video)

I like Princess Nyah because she wears what I (as a straight male) can only (probably inaccurately) describe as corsets like it's nothing. And also because her EP is pretty great too.

Chipmunk featuring Talay Riley - Look For Me (Video)

I assure you, his album is great.

"But no dummy, that's the shit I'm sprinkling //
The album with to keep the registers ringing //
In real life, I'm much more distinguished //
I'm like a bloke from London, England..."
( c ) Jay-Z

Serese - You Gotta Girlfriend

Ridiculously talented girl group Serese's manager playing an unmixed version of one of their new tracks. Let it be known I wrote about these girls in Redtop Magazine aaaaages ago. I shouldn't need to brag because you should know how I get down, but in the same feature (which I wrote in like March) I predicted that Jay Sean would blow up MAJORLY on the back of his US launch (and we all know what happened there) and that Master Shortie would push through to mainstream consciousness. In fact, the only one of my three draft picks who didn't make a major impact this year were Serese so it was a relief to hear this joint, which just confirms my belief that they're destined for big things. This is an R&B slow burner with tight vocals and GREAT production.

Here's a bonus - some studio footage of them listening back to a more... upbeat track from their album. It's not my cup of KA Carribean Kola, but I can definitely see what they were tryna do.

Shout to the Serese girls.

"Just take what you need, and be on your way, and stop crying your heart out..."

Oasis - Stop Crying Your Heart Out

This is my favourite Oasis song, so I was excited when I heard that Leona would be covering it for her forthcoming sophomore album Echo. Obviously in hindsight that excitement was ridiculous - the cover is genuinely horrible, and I shouldn't really have been expecting any different. Unsurprisingly, her vocals are incredible on this but they've raped and pillaged the raw emotion of the original and replaced it with a backing choir and cheap parlour tricks. Leona is an extraordinarily talented singer, this we know already. Personally I'd trade one of the octaves for just an ounce of actual soul.

Leona Lewis - Stop Crying Your Heart Out

X-Factor's Danyl Sings Purple Rain

Let's be serious, this guy is the best contestant in the competition. Jam your Olly Murs hype. Oh was it me or was Lucie blatantly taking the piss out of Stacey when she was speaking to Demort after judges' comments?

U2 Bring Out Jay-Z

It's not exactly his best verse but that's not really the point is it? How MTV can buoy him off with some joke "Best Urban Artist" award on the same day that he's brought out as a surprise guest by U-Fucking-2 I'll never understand.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Greatest rapper of all-time.

"And if I had one chance, I'd get in where I fit in girl // All I need is one chance..." ( c ) Trey Songz

One Chance featuring Trey Songz, Lloyd and Bobby Valentino - Look At Her (remix

The video has NOTHING to do with the song. Like it's literally clips compiled from all over the place that aren't really in-sync. So ignore that, it's the music that's important here.

This is some modern-day R&B dream team shit. Didn't get enough love when it dropped a couple of years back, but it's one of the best R&B remixes of this decade. All three of the featured "big-names" do alot.

Which reminds me... whatever happened to Bobby V? First album was hard, his second album wasn't exactly slacking either and he's just disappeared. That independent one he dropped last year wasn't really levelling with his old stuff, and it's just a mess now. His voice was never that good but he had some great songs, including this which was my favourite from his sophomore.

50 Cent featuring Ne-Yo - Baby By Me (VIDEO)

Has 50 finally got one?

Maxwell Live On Jools Holland

If, like me, you weren't lucky enough to catch Maxwell when he was in town last week, here's something to ease the pain (or rub salt in the wounds depending on your perspective on life).

"Boy Better Know Music, my pinky looks like the white side of the rubix..." ( c ) Skepta

Boy Better Know - We're Going In

For the record I do actually like this.

Lily Allen Does Impressions

I love Lily. The Cheryl Cole, Mancunian and Edith Bowman (Scottish) are pretty much spot on.

"It's hard to think of them polite flows...

When Stefano Pilati suits are your night clothes,
And Jordon sweatsuits are your flight clothes,
And you still make it, even when they say your flight's closed..."

This is when Drake transitioned "from fitting in to standing out" in my eyes. Unbelievably, there are still people who don't really know about the kid who will undoubtedly be remembered as the Hottest Rapper of the year (Hov is so far gone (no pun intended) that he doesn't even count). So for those of you who haven't figured it out yet, it's not too late to hop on the bus. Here's a bonus:

"Don't ask permission, just ask forgiveness.." ( c ) 40's Mama

"The motivation for me, is them telling me what I could not be // oh well..." ( c ) Skateboard P

Jay-Z featuring Pharrell - So Ambitious

Biggest song on BP3 by miles. This is that motivational music. And shout to Pharrell for managing to pinpoint the height of aspiration:

"I'm so ambitious, I might hit two sisters..."

Bun the fortune and the fame. I just want me some of that Kylie and Danni. Venus and Serena. Tia and Tamara. Jessica and Ash... you get the picture.

("Fuck off." ( c ) Hov)

"I don't mind a relationship, but I need a patient chick // so I'm chasing the one like Agent Smith..." ( c ) Ghetts

Ghetts featuring Tension - Relationship

It's not about searching for the words "ghetto relationship" in YouTube. I should've known better. From his mixtape Ghetto Gospel, this is a banger which I always draw for when trying to demonstrate that Ghetts is capable of more than just hype tunes. That was probably his most complete mixtape to date, and an indication of what his album might sound like.

And as a bonus, here's his recent interview with Fresh Cuts.

Ghetts - Fresh Cuts Interview

Marvell - Westwood Set (VIDEO)

Because, whether people choose to admit it or not, we all know they're good.

"Plenty emcees offend me, incidently or directly, I think it's envy..."

Ghetts - Does It Now

New Ghetts. Must be Christmas. Calm Before The Storm coming soon.
