I'm So Late On... Maverick Sabre

Maverick Sabre - Sometimes

On a quite serious note, this guy is fucking amazing. I don't know how it took me this long to realise seeing as his name has been cropping up everywhere, especially at the Roundhouse where he worked on the 30/30 project and did the Emerging Proms. In fact, here he is doing a little acoustic ting at the Roundhouse Studios' EMI Studio.

Maverick Sabre - Better Days

SERIOUS talent. Pissed I was probably sitting in the radio studio (literally next door) whilst that was being recorded.

"You make me so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so..." ( c ) Floetry

Floetry - Say Yes

"All you gotta do is say yes...". Jheeeeeze. Marsha killed it differently.

This is the definition of a modern R&B classic.

This post was inspired by the video that follows. Just reminded me what a banger the original was. Cupcake is alright though, I'm very much impressed.

Shanique - Say Yes (Acapella)

Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed (Jakwob remix)

This has been around for a little while, and I'm a litte late, but it's so sick I really don't care.

Obviously the original is gonna be a smash, but this remix is spectacular.

Marvell F64s

Got a lickle Marvell related "big announcement" soon to come but I'll hold off on that one until the time's right. Just know that I do this.

Big up Vertex, Shocka and Double. SB.TV is doing so much this year.

Double S

For the record (with regard to the constant back-and-forth sniping), everyone knows I've got time for Chipmunk but Shocka's good peoples and he's never come across as any type of hater. I'm just saying.

McLean - My Name (VIDEO)

I feel like the production on this overwhelms the vocal just a little bit, and perhaps takes away slightly from what is otherwise a great R&B song. That's just me though, and it's probably only because I've heard it performed acoustically so I know what it REALLY sounds like. This video mix sounds a lot tighter than the demo that's been floating around for a while.

How do you follow a debut like Broken?! McLean's soon to be a superstar though - great vocalist, talented songwriter, and a genuinely nice guy to boot.

As a bonus (and in case the Fraser-esque original is too electro-fied for you) here's the incredible acoustic version that he did for us at Roundhouse Radio.

McLean - My Name (Fresh Cuts Acoustic)

I'm torn between giving this another spin on the show this week or playing the Boy Better Know or Scorcher remixes.

It's released March 3rd which is plenty of time for the track to gain momentum and hopefully get the Radio 1 support it'll need. 25,000 YouTube hits in just over a day is pretty damn impressive.

Am I allowed to feel highly proud of myself that I was spinning Broken waaaay back in 2007?

"She says I'm not romantic, I say she's too dramatic // I tell her, while we're at it, we can work it night by night..."

Chromeo - Night By Night (Skream remix)

I don't know how I'm so late on this one. Shout out Roundhouse Radio's Dave Gamble for putting me on to this banger. Some futuristic, psychadelic grown-up's music.

"Take yourself a picture when I'm standing at the mound // Man I swear it's going down, I'm just repping for my town..." ( c ) Drake

Birdman featuring Drake and Lil' Wayne - 4 My Town (Play Ball)

"See that Aston Martin, when I start it, heard the sound,
I ain't never graduated, I ain't got no cap and gown,
But the girls in my class, who were smart enough to pass,
Be at all my fucking parties, grabbing money off the ground..."

All hail Mr Lyrical. After Drizzy passes through, nobody else on this song matters. And once again he delivers a classic chorus.

Birdman has a knack for ending up on these ridiculously hot songs and taking them for himself. Brrrr.

Ghetts - Artillery (VIDEO)

Sub Focus - Could This Be Real (Joker remix)

Out on Monday along with the original and an overly fucked D&B remix. I'd also recommend Sub Focus' album, that really impressed me last year.

McLean - My Name

McLean featuring Scorcher - My Name (remix)

We got the world-exclusive first performance of the original on Fresh Cuts back in November 2009. McLean passed through and delivered a stunning acoustic session which you can check out here. I know I'm sounding like a broken record when I go on about McLean and Bluey, but what immense talent.

McLean - My Name (Boy Better Know remix)

Scratchy - Girls

Video's quite funny. I have no idea what Scratchy's CD is gonna sound like now though.

Skepta - Bad Boy

Couple overwhelmingly fit women in this one. The main girl...

I like Skepta but when are MCs gonna realise these bait attempts at going electro and getting some mainstream love aren't going to work. There's a massive difference between this or RockNRoller and tracks like Wearing My Rolex or one of Dizzee's smashes.

I hope I'm wrong and this is the Number One smash that Skepta's angling for, but I'd be surprised.

"New top, something that I copped, from my new shop // Unforgivable aftershave, spray a few drops..." ( c ) Giggs

Giggs featuring Shola Ama - Blow

Davinche on the beat. Haven't got a lot to say about this one except that I like it a lot. If every MC in the country started sounding like Giggs I'd emigrate (no jokes please) but he's definitely good at what he does.

Chipmunk - SB.TV F64

I can understand if you find Chipmunk's attitude offensive (I don't think it is and I don't think there's anything wrong with a healthy dose of self-belief or a teenager fucking up, but that's just me, I like Kanye), but people still wanna pretend he's shit? Each to their own.

"I don't know what your name is, or who you came with, but I ain't leaving without you..." ( c ) Jaheim

Jaheim featuring Jadakiss - Ain't Leaving Without You (remix)

Vocally Jaheim's probably my favourite male R&B artist. This guy's voice is something else; in an era of Sean Kingstons and Akons I have no fucking idea why he's not more highly-rated. Perhaps because although his albums are reasonably strong they're always tainted with some R&B Thug bullshit and he's yet to take a bonafide classic CD.

Personally I think he's the US vocal equivalent of Lemar, and it's a strange coincidence that they're both artists who a lot of people feel haven't lived up to the potential of their voices.

Usher - Fooling Around

Produced by Jermaine Dupri and written by Bryan Michael Cox. This is (brand new) classic Usher.

Happy New Year 2010!

Yeah, it's three days late. That's just how I get down.

Happy New Year people. I had a good 2009 so I thought it's only right to give thanks to everyone who played a part ("you know who you are!" (c) Drake) and/or supported me (massaged my ego) during the past twelve months. I owe you, hopefully in 2010 I'll be able to pay that back with interest.

I was catching up with a friend the other day who enquired as to the people I've been lucky enough to interview or meet in a professional capacity in 2009 (and the parties and screenings and festivals and press night I've been too - I live the high life baby!), and it was a long fucking list, so I know I've been blessed.

Only positive vibes for 2010, you get back what you put out there (no Noel Edmonds). Now I'm off to try and find a Saturdays/Danielle Lloyd/Gemma Atkinson calendar so I don't have to buy one for £99 from eBay. Hopefully seeing Vanessa from The Saturdays on my wall every day will convince the universe to bring her towards me.

Obenewa - Therapy (Mixtape)

Obenewa - Letter To My Heart

This is taken from the Truth MoveMENT affiliated London songstress' free-download mixtape Therapy which you can get hold of here. There's a feature on the mixtape from Bashy and plenty of production from The Truth MoveMENT; it's a pretty nice introduction to Obenewa, there's some really good songs on there which make me excited to hear what a polished album would sound like. Definitely recommend checking it out.

Obenewa featuring ProGression - Breakin' Up

Chipmunk featuring Wiley - 2010

Shaaaatap. About "Chipmunk's shit". Do you fools listen to music or just skim through it? Bare indirects.

Taken from Chip's fortcoming mixtape For The Fun Of It.

"MJ at Summer Jam, Obama on the text // Y'all should be afraid of what I'm gonna do next..." ( c ) Jay-Z

Jay-Z featuring Swizz Beatz - On To The Next One

Did Hov just fuck around and drop the best video of 2009 on New Years Eve? Jeeeeez. This is crazy.
