DJ DeeKay - In The Mix

Thursday, 29 April 2010

"In fact, let's be honest, that last Relapse CD was ehhh, perhaps I ran them accents into the ground..." ( c ) Eminem

Eminem - Not Afraid

Produced by Boi-1da, this is the first single from Slim Shady's forthcoming Recovery album. Without a shadow of doubt, this is the best lead single of his career and is hopefully indicative of a more serious Shady. He's been killing shit lately, I'm very hyped for the album.

Blame featuring Ruff Sqwad - On My Own (Drumsound and Bassline Smith remix)

Out this week - this is Dubstep at it's absolute best.

"Locked in a cage, but I never got lost in a rage // started murking MCs, seven-time battle champ on The Jump Off stage..." ( c ) Sam Khan

Sam Khan - Fall Back

Now I'm impressed. Sam actually fucked this up. He still suffers from the problem that Asian males have truly unfortunate rap voices but it's not like he can defeat genetics, and he goes hard enough (pause) on this for it to not matter all that much.

The thing is though, this has been around for a few months and it's unquestionably one of the biggest tracks around, so why has it not recieved more support?

"Guess my heart, was not the first to be broken, and my eyes, won't be the last to cry..."

Blackout featuring Tsunami - Hopelessly Devoted

Jeeeeeeeez. So who's old enough to remember Garage?! Blackout produced UKG banger Mr DJ (who remembers the shitty MC'ing?) back in the day - this is moodier and more downbeat but still one of the biggest tracks I've heard so far this year.

Dubstep remix from Hy Grade is equally nuts, you can check that out below.

Craig David - All Alone Tonight (Acoustic)

The guy's still got it.

Devlin featuring Giggs - Shot Music (VIDEO)

McLean - Finally In Love (VIDEO)

Big up McLean, one of the most impressive and soulful vocalists to come out of this country in the last twenty years. There's an incredible group of soul singers who are about to break through and for the first time since Craig David, this scene is exciting again.

McLean's second single is released on June 13th but you can pre-order it on iTunes now. Fingers crossed it brings his second solo top ten smash. His is one of three albums from UK artists I'm DYING to hear this Summer (Tinie's and Bluey's being the other two).

Oh I've rated Elarica since the last Harry Potter movie - stunning leading lady. Don't let EastEnders get you confused.

Thursday, 22 April 2010

"I'm on a mission, I don't even wanna kiss her // honey I won't even miss ya, when I'm done with that..." ( c ) Tinie Tempah

Tinie Tempah featuring Labrinth - Frisky

Released on June 6th (same day as Giggs' banger which, coincidentally, you can see the video for below).

This is a straight smash and it will probably be a second Number 1 single, but having heard the studio version now I don't think it'll resonate with as many people as Pass Out. I personally love it but I don't think it'll be the great unifier that Tinie's last single was.

"Late parties but I ain't dancing // Courvoisier filling up eight glasses..." ( c ) Giggs

Giggs - Look What The Cat Dragged In

Banger. I like how Giggs has quietly gone from being a bit jokes to actually quite sick with three amazing singles.

Tinie Tempah featuring Labrinth - Frisky (Live)

Sounds like Tinie and Lab have done it again, although perhaps by making the exact same song, down to the D&B break at the end. Irrespective of that (if it ain't broke, don't fix it), this is another anthem. Straight banger.

In fact on first listen, I actually like this more than Pass Out. Am I allowed to say that?!

He's 'bout to be a bigger star than his mum thought.

“When raindrops hit the tin roof it's crazy // that's a metaphor, did I lose ya baby?” ( c ) Drake

Robin Thicke featuring Drake - Teach You A Lesson

Drake and Robin Thicke! That's a Fresh Cuts dream team. I know this is like three years old but every time I listen to Comeback Season it jumps out at me (on what is a stellar mixtape). Thicke's obviously a monster on the vocals but Drake actually kills this, flow so on-point.

Oh I've got to say, Robin Thicke is so audacious. The man is unafraid to just say some shit. I mean this joint is the equivalent of Justin Timberlake's Dick In A Box, except Thicke's not joking.

Gyptian featuring Vybz Kartel - Hold Yuh (remix)

This is so serious. It's not that I'm late per se, the original has been sitting on my laptop for months, but I never really listened to it until tonight.

And if you thought you hated Nicki Minaj, you don't know about hatred until you hear her Jafakin' on this one. Which is a shame because when she's not doing her best Foxy Brown impression, her flow is nice on this.

Akala - SB.TV F64

This is unmissable. I know I just posted Sway's but Akala's is the best F64 by a country-mile. Listen carefully, you might learn something.

I don't know why this guy isn't lauded by critics and fans as one of the greatest lyricists of our generation. This is what UK Hip-Hop should sound like, there's hunger and energy and passion in this that some of these other rappers could do well to learn from.

Sway - SB.TV F64

"Arsenal of lyrics, I'm too hot for Spurs..." ( c ) The UK's Number One Rapper (his words)

He killed it. That was ridiculous, and should dead any argument from the top boys that they're above doing F64s. Wiley, Ghetts, Kano, Skepta, Tinie Tempah (because he's not just some pop guy) - we're waiting.

Eliza Doolittle - Skinny Genes

Believe it or not, I'm only hearing this version of the track for the first time today. I've been loving the Slugz and Joe remix for a while, and bought that this morning (having waited a couple of months for the release), and whilst copping that, figured it wouldn't hurt to check out the video for the original.

It's kinda good. I still prefer the Dubstep remix but the original has a breezy, summery vibe that sounds great on a day like today. Oh and I sort of fancy her (allow me), and have done since she came down to the Roundhouse for the Redtop Magazine cover shoot. So the video isn't exactly painful to watch.

If you wanna support, you can buy the track and the significantly darker Slugz and Joe remix here.

Oh and Pro Green's single is out this week too, support that. People are loving it, that one could actually go Number One.

Behind The Scenes... Princess Nyah's Hooligans

I don't usually bother posting or even watching these Behind The Scenes tings because I don't usually care. But ummm... it's Princess yougetme.

I'm not exactly coy about fancying a new industry chick every week but ask Chinners, my love for Nyah has at least been consistent.

Miguel featuring J Cole - All I Want Is You

Produced by the legendary Salaam Remi. I know Miguel from singing the hook on Blu's amazing First Thing's First. Check that out below. This time he hooks up with Roc Nation's J Cole for this banger that people seem to be loving at the moment.

Bluey Robinson @ Fresh Cuts Live

I'm counting down the days until this young man is the biggest thing in the world. I won't even entertain the possibility that it won't happen because he's pretty much the most complete breaking artist I've ever seen. Except maybe Drizzy. But definitely from the UK. No pressure Bluey.

If you messed up and missed out, you can catch Bluey Robinson performing at Wireless Festival on Friday 2nd and Sunday 4th July. I'd recommend the Sunday, because I'm gonna be there. And apparently some guy called Jay-Z and this other guy called Drake might turn up too. Oh and my buffting future girlfriend Lily Allen. And a couple other man you might've heard of. Apparently one of them had a single out a few weeks back that a few people liked. It's a decent lineup, almost as good as Fresh Cuts Live.

More info here.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH - you should really go Wireless at Hyde Park on Sunday 4th July because the lineup is one of the best things I've ever seen. People don't always understand when I'm not being serious, so I thought I'd make it perfectly clear what the subtext of the above paragraph was.

"I'm guessing this the part where I start // telling you I wanna tear your body all apart..." ( c ) Trey Songz

Trey Songz - The Machine

Trey's somewhere else. Can any of these other R&B singers compete? Even Usher's been left trailing behind.

Songz dropped one of the best R&B albums of the decade last year! And somehow, people are still sleeping. They need to turn off the radio and wake the fuck up!

Marvell - Marvell Music (VIDEO)

This tune's been hard for a while. Nice video.
