VIDEO: Big Sean feat. Nicki Minaj - Ass (remix)

I ain't gonna say too much about Big Sean, the single least charismatic rapper to make it to the big leagues in recent memory. This is a banger and I'm delighted Nicki's gone back to being sexy. I mean the kooky wig stuff was cool, gotta do something for the kids and all, but lest we forget, Nicki's fine.

Drake feat. Nicki Minaj - Proud Of You (Live on SNL)

Firstly, it took a few listens to grow on me, but I ever so slightly love this song now.

Secondly, Drake fancies Nicki. I mean we all fancy Nicki, but homie is smitten. This unrequited love thing isn't adorable, it's a little bit creepy. With that said, this war of attrition he's waging on her might eventually end up paying dividends. This kind of relentless long-term effort has to pay off at some point, right ladies?

Finally, let's take a moment to enjoy these outstanding GIFs. Drizzy really is a funny/highly excitable dude.

Take Care is finally out on November 15th. Can't wait.

Kano - Blue Sky: Blood My In Is Music

fadsfgwfdsfsagsfd. This is sick.

Okay, we get it. Kano's coming to take back the crown and he's not planning on sneaking in quietly. Good.

Big up Versetti, some silent shadowy Illuminati figure in the background pulling the strings on most of what's been dope of late.

LISTEN BACK: Ms Dynamite in conversation with Fresh Cuts

Last night on Fresh Cuts we played out an interview I recorded a few weeks back with the legendary Ms Dynamite. She's an artist I literally grew up listening to (her debut album A Little Deeper was one of the first CDs I ever bought with my own cash) so that was a real honour.

Listen back to the interview below where the Mercury Music Prize winner discusses her return to music, being surrounded by a new generation of artists who idolize her and how working with 367 (aka A Dot, Lady Leshurr and Lioness) nearly brought her to tears.

VIDEO: Labrinth feat. Tinie Tempah - Earthquake

Definite Top 10, possible #1. This video is awesome, although I can't help but think of Swagger Jagger when I see it. I'm a sucker for these kind of visual effects though.

I interviewed Labrinth recently for Fresh Cuts. That's gonna air on the show in a couple of weeks time - it's an interesting interview, partly because Lab's a particular affable guy (the definition of a person who gives off good vibes) and partly because he had a lot of stuff to say. Look out for it.

VIDEO: Daley - Smoking Gun/Dangerously In Love (Dropout Live Session)

Daley's too much, we're actually ever-so-slightly not worthy.

Childish Gambino - Bonfire

I've been playing this on radio, but for anyone who hasn't heard it yet, check out the lead single from Childish Gambino's forthcoming album Camp. Gambino is perhaps better known as actor, comedian and writer Donald Glover, who plays Troy in the genuinely brilliant sitcom Community. A genuine jack of all trades, he's also written for 30 Rock and The Daily Show, but is making quite a name for himself as a rapper.

Gambino is a punchline animal, as is evident on this track and Freaks and Geeks, but a listen to past projects Culdesac and EP suggests a rapper also inclined towards the self-aware angst of someone like Drake. He's good, whether he's beasting or even singing. One to watch.

Mic Righteous - SB.TV F64

Yeah... this guy is fucked.

"I'mma show a lot of people love, I'mma give them credit where it's due // anyone who doubted I could do it, this the one I dedicate to you..." ( c ) Drake

New track from the vastly underrated K-OS featuring fellow Toronto rapper/singer Drizzy. This Drake verse is far from the usual though - it's much more Comeback Season than Take Care. Aubrey ain't been rapping like this in a while and it's refreshing to hear that old flow again. He was sick from before So Far Gone.

I'd speculate this 16 isn't fresh but whether this is a recent verse or something from the vaults, it's all semantics - this is some smoothed out dopeness.

Listen: K-OS feat. Drake - Faith (Part II)

Switch feat. Andrea Martin - I Still Love You

This shit is amazing - I'm late on it and I've been hearing and reading about it for a while but only heard the track for the first time this week. Absolutely incredible vocal married with brilliantly minimal production.

Listen: Switch feat. Andrea Martin - I Still Love You

Released on Dubsided tomorrow.

VIDEO: Marger featuring Scrufizzer & No Lay - Goonz

Probably my favourite Grime tune of 2011. Sick beat, sick verses and a sick video with a dope concept. Love this.

Saturday, 4 June 2011

"You're evil like three chicks and a cauldron // you could only love with a potion, asking me to make you wet like an ocean..." ( c ) Dot Rotten

Russo feat. Dot Rotten - Bad Tonight

This is a banger but more significantly, Dot's basically the best out right now and on one hell of a hot streak.

MUSIC: Terror Danjah feat. Ruby - Full Attention

Another banger from legendary UK producer Terror Danjah. This should hopefully light up radio and raves across the country when it's released in July. Massive tune.

Saturday, 7 May 2011

"And now my lady looking at me like I lost it // baby I dream big so sleep makes me exhausted..."

Emilio Rojas - Life Without Shame

I heard this for the first time as I shuffled my way through my 'new music' iPod playlist this morning and subsequently reloaded it about ten times. Very dope shit.

Dunno a lot about Rojas (although I've just downloaded the mixtape this joint was taken from) except that he's been around for a couple of years and has been co-signed by Green Lantern amongst others. Definitely shows a lot of potential on this though.

AUDIO: Akala - Fire In The Booth

Big up Akala and big up Charlie Sloth. I couldn't even pick a quotable from this because he says so much stuff.

VIDEO: Bluey Robinson - Showgirl (30-second teaser)

Yo, this looks good! Full-length video drops on May 22nd (which is my birthday btw, in case anyone wants to send cake my way) and the Labrinth-produced single drops on iTunes a week later on 29th May. Finally! Fingers crossed radio gives Bluey the support he deserves on this one.

Monday, 2 May 2011

VIDEO: Chris Brown - She Ain't You

Sorry to the vocal minority that think he's been "forgiven" by the public with a relative amount of ease, but Breezy's #winning. It's entirely a testament to the quality of the product he's putting out. F.A.M.E. is a very strong album, he's chosen the right singles and features, and the visuals are good.

...I'm not really sure about the bit in this video where he walks on water though. Don't get ahead of yourself bro.

Tuesday, 22 March 2011

Dot Rotten - 1Xtra Freestyle

Dot Rotten dropped this freestyle for Westwood as part of 1Xtra's Freestyle Week. If Dot's not in your top five, you're lost.

Monday, 7 March 2011

VIDEO: Ghostpoet featuring Kano - Cash and Carry Me Home (remix)

Yeah, this really works.

SoulCultureTV Talks To Yasmin About Her Forthcoming Single Finish Line

Big up the SoulCulture fam all day long. Once you've watched the interview and discovered the story behind what I firmly expect to be Yasmin's proper breakthrough single, you can check out the dope video to the Labrinth-produced track below. She's going cleeeeeeaaaaaaaar.

The Weeknd - Wicked Games

Wow. Last time I felt like this about some new shit, I'd just heard The XX for the first time. This is craaaaaaazy.

Sunday, 6 March 2011

Maverick Sabre - Look What I've Done

I appreciate that I'm late on this but I was early on Maverick Sabre around this time last year, so umm... yeah. Big tune.

His EP is out now. Head to iTunes for that or do what I just did and cop it from Amazon.

VIDEO: Wretch 32 featuring Example - Unorthodox

This is a smash.

VIDEO: Bluey Robinson - Showgirl (Acoustic Street Session)

If you read this blog then you already know what it is. Big up Bluey.

VIDEO: @Griminal x SNK - Talkin' About (@Hyperfrank's Volume Control #2)

The second installment of Hyperfrank and Roundhouse Radio's Volume Control project features Griminal over SNK Beats' Robots. Trapstar sponsored this edition, and Grim murked. Hyperfrank's exclusive behind-the-scenes interview with Griminal for Roundhouse Radio is coming next week.

Wednesday, 2 March 2011

Rewd passed through Roundhouse Radio a couple of weeks ago to lace Fresh Cuts with his presence on the inaugural Behind The Bars session. The idea came from an afternoon me and Chinners spent with Rewd last year, back when he called himself Skandal, flicking through some classic Hip-Hop beats and lamenting that we didn't have the time for him to write fresh bars to some old favourites.

Fast forward a few months and we decided to get some of the country's best MCs and rappers (they're the same thing, but I digress) into our studio, give them the time to write something fresh, exclusively for us, to a classic beat they've always wanted to murder, and document the whole process.

This footage ended up distorting that original idea slightly - there's not quite as much coverage of the beat selection and writing process as I originally envisioned, but there's no doubt Rewd duppied this Dr Dre produced instrumental (for those who don't know, the beat is Jay-Z's Trouble from comeback album Kingdom Come). The wordplay is sick.

VIDEO: Anisa - Dominoes (SB.TV A64)

Back when this girl first started rolling with Alwayz (waaaay back, before Chipmunk blew) I was fully in love. What a beautiful, soulful, emotive voice. Nice to see her back.

Sunday, 20 February 2011

VIDEO: Ryan Leslie - Maybachs and Diamonds (VIDEO)

I wish R-Les would stop rapping. In fact, I wish he'd just stick to writing and producing gems. This isn't wack, but he's a corny rapper and in the hands of someone like Fabolous this track could've been the hottest shit of the year. Just look what Fab did with You Be Killin' 'Em. Great beat, nice chorus - this is such a vibe (especially with the live band), but Ryan Leslie ain't a rapper, even in this era where everyday, borderline dorky dudes can get on (*Drizzy voice*).

Saturday, 19 February 2011

VIDEO: Kanye West - All Of The Lights

Jeeeez, make sure you watch this in HD. Visually this is nuts. And Rihanna's outfit... Love this video.

Tuesday, 15 February 2011

"Baby you wintertime cold, the night is still young, drink that dinner wine slow..." ( c )

VIDEO: J Cole featuring Drake - In The Morning

The video girl is cute... Umm, I don't know about the actual video though. With real footage from Drake's show in Paris, it's a nice (staged) insight into the life of Cole, and it was a cool way to do it - let's be real, a video for this song could quite conceivably have gone somewhere totally different.

Wednesday, 9 February 2011

"Everyone's staring at your frame when you're passing // Used to get me jealous, I ain't changed, I'm a bastard..." ( c ) Wretch 32

Wretch 32 featuring Alex Mills - Anniversary

This is big. MCs have been tryna make these kinda album cuts forever, and it's rarely as effectively executed (or even as sincere) as this. No hate, but Wretch's particular brand of lyricism and wordplay sometimes grates on me but he pulls it off so smoothly here - that second verse in particular is straight poetry. Sweet and breezy, he's already said it's only an album track but come the summer and the album dropping, radio might decide to embrace it.

Tuesday, 8 February 2011

VIDEO: Terri Walker (@TheRealMzWalker) - So Hard

Umm, I'd quite like this to spin on Fresh Cuts this week, so if anybody wants to hook me up..., this really needs to be in my inbox.

Terri Walker is back with this sick Ski Beatz produced slow burner. Signed to Dame Dash's BluRoc, this is going to be her year over in the US for sure, and hopefully she'll finally receive the support she deserves at home too. It's important we don't neglect our homegrown artists who are making international moves, especially when they're as talented as Miss Walker.

This track is craaaaaazy man. The vibe is so on-point.

LISTEN BACK: Fresh Cuts (05-02-11) on Roundhouse Radio with special guest Loick Essien (@LoickEssien)

VIDEO: Tinie Tempah performs Pass Out on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Nice, can't really begrudge Tinie his success. I don't care what anyone says, a year after it was all over radio in the UK, Pass Out still sounds fresher than 3/4 of what's out there now. I can do without the very American "hell yeah"s in this video though.

Big up Tinie, fingers crossed it works out for him over there!

Sunday, 30 January 2011

VIDEO: Daley - Blame The World (SBTV A64)

This is sick.

VIDEO: Jessie J - Price Tag

It's nice and creative, I wonder if this video or Do It Like A Dude will be the defining visual of her career. They're pretty much polar opposites and this song is probably more representative of her sound.

VIDEO: Dot Rotten (@ItsDotRotten) - Thunder (#VolumeControl #1)

So when Hyperfrank brought this idea to me a few months ago, I knew straight away she was on to a winner. Simple concept that would engage Grime fans and give them an opportunity to have just the right amount of creative control.

Fast forward to last week, and she brought Dot Rotten into the Roundhouse Studios to vocal Beat Geeks' Nightmare. Real talk, from the second Dot started putting down that hook it was obvious he wasn't playing. He wrote two of the three verses on the spot and recorded the whole track in about two hours - by the end of the session it was becoming apparent that this wasn't an ordinary recording session; Dot was making a Grime anthem.

Here we are a week later and the track's just received its first play on Semtex's 1Xtra show (complete with a couple of reloads and a big co-sign). I'm spinning it on Fresh Cuts tomorrow (alongside Hyperfrank talking to Dot, exclusively for Roundhouse Radio, about the project, his involvement in it and the track) and I'd be massively surprised if it doesn't reappear on 1Xtra over the weekend and make its Kiss debut on Monday night. That's a serious start for this project and things are only going to get bigger.

One last word - whilst we were in the studio, Dot played me a track from his forthcoming album. It's fucked. Genuine Radio 1 A-List business, without a cheesy hook or any euro-pop techno bullshit. Watching him work in the studio and chatting to him a bit, it's clear he's meticulous with a smart head on his shoulders. Watch what he does in 2011.

Actually, real last word - big up Hyperfrank. That right there is how you have a great idea, then make it happen, then get it played on 1Xtra. Big.

VIDEO: Rewd Adams - Spaceship

Rewd Adams is back with a banger. Taken from his forthcoming Rewd Awakening project. We're doing something with Rewd over at Redtop very soon which should be quite interesting so keep an eye out for that.

Global Faction put together a nice little promo for his joint too which you can see below.

Nicki Minaj - SB.TV Interview

I swear, that English accent she does is so fucking hot. I really don't know why that's attractive, but it is. Just me that was weak at the knees at the weekend when Westwood taught her the word 'par' and she kept saying it? ...I've got issues.

Nicki REALLY reminds me of someone I know, I'm not going to say who on the off-chance she both reads this and finds the comparison unflattering, but everything from their mannerisms to their facial expressions to their physical appearance are so much alike. It's a little worrying considering Nicki's playing a character, but to be fair I thought it when I first saw this interview years ago.

As you can tell, Nicki's not playing insane here so it's not a par.

VIDEO: Loick Essien (@LoickEssien) performs Stuttering acoustically for Fresh Cuts

The amazing Loick Essien passed through Fresh Cuts last week and performed three acoustic tracks for us (including a beautiful and unexpected cover that I'll keep a surprise for now). That session and interview will air in full on Saturday Feburary 5th at 8pm on Roundhouse Radio but until then, here's a lil' something to show you what he's working with (p-pause).

This kid's voice is honestly amazing. No studio trickery (I'd know, I mixed down the session that'll be airing on the show), just a guitar and his soulful vocals.

VIDEO: Bluey Robinson - Fresh Cuts Interview @ Turning Point 2010

I hadn't ever seen this before and stumbled across it randomly whilst doing some work on the Roundhouse's website. Figured I should post it up here. Nice little video package - you won't learn anything particularly new seeing as we did this interview in September 2010, but it's still worth watching. Also saw a Roll Deep interview we did on the same day up there but umm... they're not that interesting. No par intended.

I'd forgotten how Bluey killed this show. He's gonna be performing at YoYo (Notting Hill Arts Club) in February, definitely a must-reach.
