I interviewed Labrinth recently for Fresh Cuts. That's gonna air on the show in a couple of weeks time - it's an interesting interview, partly because Lab's a particular affable guy (the definition of a person who gives off good vibes) and partly because he had a lot of stuff to say. Childish Gambino - Bonfire

I've been playing this on radio, but for anyone who hasn't heard it yet, check out the lead single from Childish Gambino's forthcoming album Camp. Gambino is perhaps better known as actor, comedian and writer Donald Glover, who plays Troy in the genuinely brilliant sitcom Community. A genuine jack of all trades, he's also written for 30 Rock and The Daily Show, but is making quite a name for himself as a rapper.

Gambino is a punchline animal, as is evident on this track and Freaks and Geeks, but a listen to past projects Culdesac and EP suggests a rapper also inclined towards the self-aware angst of someone like Drake. He's good, whether he's beasting or even singing. One to watch.

New track from the vastly underrated K-OS featuring fellow Toronto rapper/singer Drizzy. This Drake verse is far from the usual though - it's much more Comeback Season than Take Care. Aubrey ain't been rapping like this in a while and it's refreshing to hear that old flow again. He was sick from before So Far Gone.

I'd speculate this 16 isn't fresh but whether this is a recent verse or something from the vaults, it's all semantics - this is some smoothed out dopeness.

Rewd passed through Roundhouse Radio a couple of weeks ago to lace Fresh Cuts with his presence on the inaugural Behind The Bars session. The idea came from an afternoon me and Chinners spent with Rewd last year, back when he called himself Skandal, flicking through some classic Hip-Hop beats and lamenting that we didn't have the time for him to write fresh bars to some old favourites.

Fast forward a few months and we decided to get some of the country's best MCs and rappers (they're the same thing, but I digress) into our studio, give them the time to write something fresh, exclusively for us, to a classic beat they've always wanted to murder, and document the whole process.

This footage ended up distorting that original idea slightly - there's not quite as much coverage of the beat selection and writing process as I originally envisioned, but there's no doubt Rewd duppied this Dr Dre produced instrumental (for those who don't know, the beat is Jay-Z's Trouble from comeback album Kingdom Come). The wordplay is sick.

This is big. MCs have been tryna make these kinda album cuts forever, and it's rarely as effectively executed (or even as sincere) as this. No hate, but Wretch's particular brand of lyricism and wordplay sometimes grates on me but he pulls it off so smoothly here - that second verse in particular is straight poetry. Sweet and breezy, he's already said it's only an album track but come the summer and the album dropping, radio might decide to embrace it.

So when Hyperfrank brought this idea to me a few months ago, I knew straight away she was on to a winner. Simple concept that would engage Grime fans and give them an opportunity to have just the right amount of creative control.

Fast forward to last week, and she brought Dot Rotten into the Roundhouse Studios to vocal Beat Geeks' Nightmare. Real talk, from the second Dot started putting down that hook it was obvious he wasn't playing. He wrote two of the three verses on the spot and recorded the whole track in about two hours - by the end of the session it was becoming apparent that this wasn't an ordinary recording session; Dot was making a Grime anthem.

Here we are a week later and the track's just received its first play on Semtex's 1Xtra show (complete with a couple of reloads and a big co-sign). I'm spinning it on Fresh Cuts tomorrow (alongside Hyperfrank talking to Dot, exclusively for Roundhouse Radio, about the project, his involvement in it and the track) and I'd be massively surprised if it doesn't reappear on 1Xtra over the weekend and make its Kiss debut on Monday night. That's a serious start for this project and things are only going to get bigger.

One last word - whilst we were in the studio, Dot played me a track from his forthcoming album. It's fucked. Genuine Radio 1 A-List business, without a cheesy hook or any euro-pop techno bullshit. Watching him work in the studio and chatting to him a bit, it's clear he's meticulous with a smart head on his shoulders. Watch what he does in 2011.

Actually, real last word - big up Hyperfrank. That right there is how you have a great idea, then make it happen, then get it played on 1Xtra. Big.

I swear, that English accent she does is so fucking hot. I really don't know why that's attractive, but it is. Just me that was weak at the knees at the weekend when Westwood taught her the word 'par' and she kept saying it? ...I've got issues.

Nicki REALLY reminds me of someone I know, I'm not going to say who on the off-chance she both reads this and finds the comparison unflattering, but everything from their mannerisms to their facial expressions to their physical appearance are so much alike. It's a little worrying considering Nicki's playing a character, but to be fair I thought it when I first saw this interview years ago.

As you can tell, Nicki's not playing insane here so it's not a par.

The amazing Loick Essien passed through Fresh Cuts last week and performed three acoustic tracks for us (including a beautiful and unexpected cover that I'll keep a surprise for now). That session and interview will air in full on Saturday Feburary 5th at 8pm on Roundhouse Radio but until then, here's a lil' something to show you what he's working with (p-pause).

This kid's voice is honestly amazing. No studio trickery (I'd know, I mixed down the session that'll be airing on the show), just a guitar and his soulful vocals.

Nice little video package - you won't learn anything particularly new seeing as we did this interview in September 2010, but it's still worth watching. Also saw a Roll Deep interview we did on the same day up there but umm... they're not that interesting. No par intended.

I'd forgotten how Bluey killed this show. He's gonna be performing at YoYo (Notting Hill Arts Club) in February, definitely a must-reach.

Jodie Connor - SB.TV A64

For the sake of full disclosure, about a month ago I wasn't that sure about Jodie Connor. I liked her image, but I just wasn't entirely convinced. I'll be the first to admit I was wrong. The single's a slow burner that's stuck in my head, she's got such a sweet quality to her voice (as is evident from this A64) and I really think she's going to be huge.

I also picked her as one of the Redtop NEXT: 2011 artists, alongside four other massive homegrown talents. This week we put on a photo shoot with all of the NEXT artists together, which was pretty crazy. Look out for that. It's a lot more exciting than I'm letting on!

This is sounding more like a hit with every listen. Video is cool, she looks great. Yasmin's voice isn't the most powerful but I really like her tone and I think her songwriting might carry her across the finish line.

Not to mention she looks like exactly the kind of popstar we need right now - the antithesis of the blonde, half-naked bimbos running around the charts. After the success of Runaway and the strength of this single, she's definitely an artist to look out for in 2011.

Yeah the hook is mild cheddar but it's hardly Good Times is it? Considering Skepta's effectively on Universal, even though his sound has changed colossally, he hasn't gone for bait pop like some other artists. On the other hand he hasn't achieved the runaway "instant" success of those other guys, but slow and steady wins the race.

What he says here about his singles being largely unrepresentative of his debut album is true. The singles were fluff, the album was a generally outstanding debut from a kid at college.

I hope he's not gassing about putting out less poppy and "safe" singles for his forthcoming sophomore LP. He's lyrically one of the most gifted MCs in the mainstream and, like Devlin, he's capable of doing things musically that are beyond some of the guys in the charts right now. Hopefully he shows that talent this time around.

Loick adds his vocals to N-Dubz's new single. Really he should've remixed the whole track because his 30 seconds on this are the best thing about it, and there's not enough of this kind of adding R&B flavour to big tracks from the top-tier UK vocalists in my opinion. Just Cherri V doing it really. Someone needs to come along and run away with people's instrumentals the way Trey Songz does over in the States.

Anyway, enjoy. This kid is gifted. I only realised recently but he sounds a bit like Usher too. Tonally I guess.

So are we all agreed Devlin's the best in the country yet? Example did a bit on this though. And actually, even though people are hating on him, Chipmunk's verse was slightly great, on some "I'm not trying, I'm just making outlandish statements" shit.

The track definitely lived up to the anticipation, the video's a bit simple for me. But if the rumours of various remixes are true, boooooy... Tinchy's made the biggest move for the scene.

This riddim is most famous for being the instrumental to Gyptian's ever-present Hold Yuh. New York's Ricky Blaze produced the track, and this is his attempt at vocalling the summer smash. Not quite as successful as the original but it was ringing off in his hometown and all over radio there a few months back.

Sounds fresh after a few months away from it, which you definitely couldn't say about the Gyptian track. And the video girl is alot.

Anyway, I can't justify liking N-Dubz as anything more than a guilty pleasure any more. This video is bordering on parody. With that said, as happens with most of their music, I've grown to love it. After all, Tulisa is "the biggest female boss that ever lived...". If I didn't feel it, I'd just be hating.

This is the second consecutive track on which Fazer's done alot though. Who'd have thunk it?! Also Dappy can actually spit, as soon as somebody outside of N-Dubz realises this and puts him on a 16-bar feature people will see. He kills this until the last two bars where it goes downhill a bit.

I foolishly slept on these girls for the longest time, mainly because as a grown-ass man, when I first saw them, their image just didn't appeal to me for whatever reason. With that said, I'd been hearing more and more about them over the past few months so when their mixtape was posted to me this week I gave it a spin out of sheer curiosity.

Turns out they're quite good. Tight vocals, relevant sound, good songs and a lot of industry support. As Chinners has pointed out to me on numerous occasions, the scene is pretty male-dominated at the moment but these girls could definitely rep for the ladies. You can peep the mixtape here.

Don't get it twisted though, I really like them, but that doesn't mean I co-sign Alright Stillll.

I was blessed to be able to watch and film this set (with my insane digital-camera-on-steroids) from the most ridiculous, no public access, sniper-esque vantage point. I came downstairs for I Know, which meant I don't have any footage of him killing that vocally, but really everyone should know the deal by now. Bluey's become quite the phenomenal live performer.

If you missed out on Turning Point last weekend and didn't catch the live stream on Myspace, you're pissed (apart from Chinners, she has a good excuse).

Nevermind though, check out these videos, hold back the tears of regret and book tickets for the Tinie Tempah tour (which Bluey will be opening on) now before they sell out. The Teenage Dirtbag performance and the Use Somebody/Club Can't Handle Me mashup have been getting bare reloads in my house.

Big up Bluey as well: let's not forget, the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Jay-Z, James Brown, Oasis, The Rolling Stones, Q-Tip, Smokey Robinson and Bob Dylan (to name just a few) have rocked that building. I personally wanted to see him much higher up the bill, but nonetheless, when he came off stage at about 5.30pm on Saturday night I was kinda proud.

The involvement of Bluey, Cleo Sol and Davinche means that even if this was mad cheesy it still would've gotten my support. As is, it's not too bad at all and RockCorps are doing alot. I've got a lot of love for what they're all about. Fingers crossed that when this drops on 10th October it'll go Top 40. I'm slyly hoping for Top 10 but I can't see it just yet.

On a side note, who wrote Davinche's bars?! His flow is kinda crazy, I didn't think the boy had it in him. He comes better than at least three of the actual full-time rappers who spit on this (Bashy and Wretch killed it a bit).

Bluey Robinson tore up the main space at the Roundhouse today as part of Turning Point Festival. His entire set was one extended highlight, and there's a few more videos to come (when I return from the makeshift 'weekend' away I'm taking up north until Tuesday) but I wanted to post these visuals of him performing a slightly less rude version of his massive Cee-Lo remix.

I'll go say a bit more about Turning Point in general and Bluey's performance specifically whenever I post those other videos (amongst which is a sick cover of Teenage Dirtbag) but you'll see from the above how well he commands the stage. That's one aspect of his performance that's improved every time I've seen him live - by the time he's at the stage where he's rocking massive festival crowds and arenas he's going to be a beast of a live performer.
